A Vejiante is a demon figure in Puerto Rican carnival celebrations that wears brightly colored, horned masks. Traditionally, Spanish folklore, however, the Vejigante mask and costume were influenced by African and Taino cultures after the Spanish invaded Puerto Rico. The vejigante mask can represent resistance to imperialism and warding off evil spirits.
